Ben Lenovitz
Ben Lenovitz (b. 1991) is a painter, illustrator, sculptor and designer from New York City. His sensibility is shaped by his fondness for the absurdities of everyday life and the imagination, the creatures and critters of urban environments and beyond, and the unabashed freedom of children’s art. Forms and figures - people, animals, robots, aliens, and those falling somewhere in between - populate Ben Lenovitz’s paintings. The paintings are mostly portraits rendered in oil stick and spray paint, characterized by their otherworldly hues and indefinite features. The subjects are often situated in single- colored, richly saturated fields, looking out from the bounds of their planes. Sometimes, they occupy scenes ranging from the banal (picking fruit from a tree, smoking in bed) to the absurd (running from a helicopter firing ammo, a rodeo starring a pink elephant). There are spray paintings on paper too, but it’s clear the subjects of these are part of the same distinctly dreamlike imagination.
